{"id":3426,"date":"2015-02-02T14:31:04","date_gmt":"2015-02-02T19:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/futurpreneur.ca\/?p=3426"},"modified":"2024-02-13T11:51:50","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T16:51:50","slug":"how-to-make-personal-development-a-process-instead-of-an-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/futurpreneur.ca\/en\/blog\/how-to-make-personal-development-a-process-instead-of-an-event\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Make Personal Development a Process Instead of an Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Written By: Hamish Knox, Sandler Training, Futurpreneur Canada Mentor, Calgary, AB, hamish.sandler.com @sandlerhamish<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An article published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard Business Review<\/a> claimed that 90% of what was learned at a one-day training program was forgotten in the next 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>David Sandler wrote a booked called, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Cant-Teach-Ride-Bike-Seminar\/dp\/0967179904\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cYou Can\u2019t Teach a Kid to Ride a Bike at a Seminar,\u201d<\/a><\/em> yet many entrepreneurs I speak with view their personal development as a series of boxes to check instead of an ongoing process.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say that event-based training is completely without merit, but attending a training event without a plan for implementation is like going to a buffet and eating two grapes. You got some sustenance, but left a whole lot behind.<\/p>\n<p>Creating a personal development process for yourself needn\u2019t be arduous. The following steps will at least be a good start.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Set long term and short term goals for your personal development<\/strong> \u2013 one of my colleagues committed to becoming a better investor, which they realized meant having a better understanding of company financial statements. That year they brought in a finance professor from a local university to teach them and their team about analyzing financial statements.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Create a personal development plan to reach your goals and stick to it<\/strong> \u2013 as an entrepreneur your most valuable resource is your time. If your answer to the question, \u201cwould attending this event help me advance toward my goal\u201d is \u201cmaybe\u201d, then skip that event.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Join, create or find a support group<\/strong> \u2013 whether it\u2019s your Futurpreneur Canada mentor, an established peer-to-peer group or a MasterMind group you create yourself, a support group should challenge you to continue your personal development and implement what you learn.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Commit to reading non-fiction<\/strong> \u2013 I challenge my clients to read 15 pages of a non-fiction book, preferably with some relevance to their current or desired role, every business day. Reading gives your sub-conscious an opportunity to chew on challenges in your business and you might find an \u201cah-ha\u201d moment in those pages<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>\u201cIf you\u2019re not growing, you\u2019re dying\u201d<\/em> is a clich\u00e9 for a reason.
