{"id":4666,"date":"2013-08-06T13:15:34","date_gmt":"2013-08-06T17:15:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/futurpreneur.ca\/?p=4666"},"modified":"2024-02-14T10:38:49","modified_gmt":"2024-02-14T15:38:49","slug":"workshop-for-mentors-has-them-wanting-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/futurpreneur.ca\/en\/blog\/workshop-for-mentors-has-them-wanting-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshop for mentors has them wanting more\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/futurpreneur.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Mentor-workshop-Ryerson-July-2013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20198\" title=\"Mentor workshop Ryerson July 2013\" src=\"https:\/\/futurpreneur.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Mentor-workshop-Ryerson-July-2013.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Entrepreneurial Mentoring: Cultivating the Art, a<\/em> pilot workshop for CYBF mentors delivered in partnership with Ryerson\u2019s The Chang School for Continuing Education was a great success!<\/p>\n<p>Mentors participated in an engaging workshop instructed by Dr. Sean Wise, Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship and Strategy at Ryerson University in Toronto, and explored:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The roles of a mentor;<\/li>\n<li>An assessment and discussion on mentors\u2019 individual mentoring styles;<\/li>\n<li>Mentoring best practices;<\/li>\n<li>Common assumptions and myths about mentoring relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What are our take-aways? Here are just a few teasers:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Insights into the role of a mentor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever been described as a <strong>\u201cwing person,\u201d <\/strong>someone who helps build entrepreneurs\u2019 confidence through your presence and support? One mentor said this role is useful especially when attending networking sessions together.<\/p>\n<p>How often do you take on the role of the <strong>\u201canti-yes person,\u201d<\/strong> and challenge your entrepreneur\u2019s conclusions? What are the implications when this role is played out in extreme? When and how often do you practice tough business love, play the devil\u2019s advocate, or become the \u2018yes mentor\u2019 and just allow the entrepreneur to make the mistakes s\/he needs to make?<\/p>\n<p>Are these roles in your mentoring repertoire? Which roles do you believe are fundamental to entrepreneurial mentoring?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mentoring styles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mentors completed a mentoring style assessment and discussed which styles they naturally gravitate towards.\u00a0 They also identified situations when each style would be most appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Which one or two of the following best characterize your mentoring style?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Letting go: allowing for an organic unfolding to the conversation\/relationship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Active listening: allowing the entrepreneur to take the lead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Advisory: identifying alternatives and options.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prescribing: telling the entrepreneur how to handle challenges\/situations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cooperative: taking a joint approach to problem-solving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are mentors asking entrepreneurs? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What does success look like for you?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You are a finalist for the Entrepreneur of the Year FuEL award.
