{"id":3961,"date":"2010-08-24T18:23:24","date_gmt":"2010-08-24T22:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/futurpreneur.ca\/?p=3961"},"modified":"2024-02-09T12:05:59","modified_gmt":"2024-02-09T17:05:59","slug":"guest-post-social-media-and-small-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/futurpreneur.ca\/fr\/blog\/guest-post-social-media-and-small-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Guest Post: Social media and small business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Today&rsquo;s guest post is by Christi Millar, CYBF&rsquo;s Director, Alberta.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For small business owners, social media should play a key part in your marketing strategy.\u00a0 Most businesses starting out have limited marketing budgets \u2013 and social media is free \u2013 so it\u2019s a given, right?\u00a0 Before delving into social media, one thing you should ask yourself is \u2013 how much time do I have?<\/p>\n<p>Two ways to begin establishing an online presence for yourself and your business are creating a profile on LinkedIn and writing a blog.\u00a0 Keep in mind that one is more time intensive than the other.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t already, create a profile on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/home?trk=hb_home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>.This will help build your personal brand as owner\/CEO of your company.\u00a0 LinkedIn has great authority in Google searches (meaning your profile will rank high if someone searches for you) and LinkedIn allows you to share relevant information about yourself and your company.\u00a0 It will take some time to set up your LinkedIn profile and begin adding your core group of connections \u2013 but once it is setup it only takes a few minutes a day to manage your connections.\u00a0 Lastly, it provides an opportunity for you to recommend people you have done work with \u2013 and better yet, people can recommend you.\u00a0 That way if someone does do a search on you, they\u2019ll have immediate feedback on the quality of your work.<\/p>\n<p>Blogging is a great way to interact with your client base, providing an opportunity to share your expertise and knowledge with a larger audience.\u00a0 Blogging is particularly important for consultants and knowledge-based workers because it&rsquo;s a way to establish yourself as an expert on certain subject matters.\u00a0 In case you haven\u2019t guessed, blogging is more time intensive but this can be counteracted if you create goals for your blog and stick to them.\u00a0 Here are some ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Determine how many times a week you want to blog.\u00a0 It could be once a week, three times a week or every day.\u00a0 Once you\u2019ve decided, stick to that number.\u00a0 Your readers will like to see consistency.<\/li>\n<li>Develop a list of potential blog topics and start working on creating a library of pre-written posts.\u00a0 This way if there are times when you\u2019re too busy to blog, you\u2019ll have an archive that you can draw from.\u00a0 A \u201chow-to post\u201d is a great way to highlight your expertise and a \u201clist post\u201d is a great way to share a top five list of favorite {you fill in the blank}.<\/li>\n<li>Blog about established Twitter trends.\u00a0 For instance, on #FollowFriday you could write a blog post about one of your favorite people\/brands that you follow on Twitter \u2013 or on #MusicMonday you can blog about one of your favorite bands.\u00a0 This also helps you follow the 80-20 rule where 20% of the time you are adding a bit of your personality and interests to your blog.<\/li>\n<li>Use comments for inspiration.\u00a0 As your following grows, more people will begin to comment on your blog.\u00a0 It is important to interact in the comments section with your readers \u2013 but often times you\u2019ll find that your readers will inspire ideas for additional blog posts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are just two social media\/networking options that are out there.\u00a0 I encourage you to take the time to research these and the other sites that are out there (Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, etc).\u00a0 People search for everything online and it\u2019s important that they\u2019re able to find you when they need you.<\/p>\n<p>Good luck \u2013 and please feel free to follow me at @CYBFWest and @Christi_Millar<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&rsquo;s guest post is by Christi Millar, CYBF&rsquo;s Director, Alberta.
